Dear brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Amid the Halloween festival happening around us, I would like to say thank you to Rose who kindly shared with me this great idea that being a Christian is like being a Pumpkin! The short piece she shared with me explains:
- God picks you from the patch and brings you in. (John 15:16)
- Then washes all the dirt off of you. (Ezekiel 36:25)
- He opens you up and scoops out all the Yucky Stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. (Ezekiel 36:33)
- Then He carves you a new smiling face. (Ephesians 2:10)
- With an open mouth to proclaim His Good News (Psalm 71:23)
- And He puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see.
- (Matthew 5:16)
NB Please refer to the referenced passage in the New Revised Standard Version for the Biblical text. With the winter months drawing in and the days getting shorter, I really enjoy this image of us being like a pumpkin, with the light of Jesus shining from within us and it makes me reflect on the opening of Johns Gospel: “All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1.3-5).
Amen.
