Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On this third Sunday after Epiphany, we hear from the gospel of Luke (4:14-21) about the beginning of Jesus’ Galilean ministry. The start of the ministry was after the devil had tempted him but failed and left him for another opportune time. The devil did not finish with him and was constantly looking for ways to bring him down. When Jesus returned to Galilee he began to teach in Synagogues, and he was praised by everyone. But when he went to Nazareth, the town he grew up in, a place where he should have felt relaxed and confident, he was rejected. We are reminded of times when we have escaped from difficult situations and relieved to be free, only to be drawn back to problems that knock our confidence back. As was the case with Jesus, the devil is always looking for any opportunity to put us off difficult work at any opportunity. Despite the rejection, Jesus proclaimed the good news of God and his mission, which was aimed at bringing radical change. I hope we, too, can bring radical change in our time if we are confident enough to follow his example.
Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence; renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness, sustain us by your mighty power.
